The Internet of Food & Farm 2020 (IoF2020) 

The IoF2020 project accelerates the uptake of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in the European farming and food chains in view  of strengthening their competitiveness and sustainability. 


The project will consolidate Europe’s leading position in the global IoT industry by fostering an ecosystem of farmers, food industry, technology providers and research institutes. The IoF2020 consortium includes 71 partners and is led by Wageningen University and Research. The consortium members include partners from similar key projects such as FIWARE and IoT-A. Their involvement will strengthen the ecosystem, while   bringing valuable knowledge acquired in these projects.


With a €35 million budget (€30 million co-funded by the EU), the project has the potential to create a paradigm shift by drastically improving productivity and sustainability of the European farming and food sector. As such, it will demonstrate the added value of smart webs of connected objects. These objects are context-sensitive and can be identified, sensed and controlled remotely in the farming and food sectors. The project was launched on January 1st 2017 and will run for four years.


The full-version of the website is currently being developed and will be available in the coming months. 

Five trials

Internet of food and farm trials and use cases

The core of the project lies within the 5 trials. These cover 5 sectors (arable, dairy, fruits, vegetables and meat), while involving end-users (e.g. farmers) and IoT developers, demonstrating innovative IoT solutions and their application in farming and food sector. To showcase each of the trials, the project is organized around 19 use cases.

The internet of arable farming

The Internet of
arable farming

The arable trial aims to integrate operations across the cropping cycle by combining IoT technologies gathering data about the growing crops (among others on soil, crop and climate conditions). The trial will also cover storage of key crops such as potatoes, wheat and soya beans.

The internet of dairy farming

The dairy trial aims to demonstrate the usefulness of a real-time sensor and GPS location data gathered from neck collars in creating additional value in the dairy chain from ‘grass to glass’.


The internet of fruits

The internet of
fruits

The fruit trial aims to demonstrate the integration of IoT technology in the fruit supply chain, while involving all actors, from farmers via food-processing companies to retailers. As such, the trial will showcase how gathered data on pre- and post-harvest losses can help in achieving greater yield and quality of fruits, next to ensuring better traceability of the products in relation to protected designation of origin.

The internet of vegetables

vegetables

The vegetables trial aims to demonstrate the application of IoT technology in controlled cultivation. This includes a combination of environmental control levels such as a fully-controlled indoor growing of vegetables under an artificial lighting system, a semi-controlled greenhouse production and an open-air (e.g. non-regulated) cultivation of vegetables. Weeding as a specific challenge in organic production will be addressed as a part of the vegetables trial.

The internet of meat

The Internet of
meat

The meat trial aims to demonstrate how individual and group animal husbandry can be optimized by applying IoT technologies. The trial will also aim to improve the communication throughout the meat supply chain, based on automated monitoring and control of advanced sensor-actuator systems.
