IoF2020 takes digital agriculture to the European Parliament

The Internet of Food & Farm 2020 (IoF2020) project was featured in the ‘Future of Farming’ event hosted by MEPs Anthea McIntyre and Jan Huitema at the European Parliament on Wednesday, 27 September 2017. The event gathered around 50 experts, end-users and policy-makers with an interest in precision farming and innovative IoT technologies.

Edwin Hecker, Communication Leader of IoF2020, presented the project and explained how digital agriculture could answer some of the most pressing societal challenges, previously addressed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He highlighted that “IoT technologies are rapidly changing the way the agri-food chains are functioning".

In his opinion, the IoF2020 project ‘‘can develop disruptive business models and increase the competitiveness of agricultural holdings, but also answer grand societal challenges and help achieve the UN SDGs’’. This is true especially in relation to SDG 2 (food security), SDG 12 (responsible consumption), SDG 13 (climate action) and SDG 15 (life on land). Edwin Hecker concluded by explaining the practical applicability of IoT powered solutions by showcasing several of the IoF2020 use-cases.

Following his presentation, the audience engaged in a constructive debate on the role of precision farming in shaping, in a positive way, future farming trends. The feedback received about the IoF2020 project gives us confidence that the future of precision farming is bright, and that our work will directly benefit European farmers and consumers in the years to come!
